Selective Breeding: I Made This Sandwich Myself

The banana: a perfect food, made to fit the perfect human hand.

Unfortunately for divinely packed lunch boxes everywhere, the modern banana is as much a product of human intervention as most of our food today.

One of the many arguments held up as proof of a divine creative hand guiding humanity is the shape of a banana. Creationists who hold to this belief explain that the banana is perfect in every way, from the way it fits in one's hand to the protective peel to the way it changes colour to indicate its edibility. Yet the banana as we know it today is the product of selective breeding that has encouraged a shape, size, taste and colour most pleasing and advantageous to those tending to them.

This principle extends outward to all other cultivated foods. Where there is human intervention, there is human shaping. Grapes, apples, oranges, and all other common produce have been shaped, not by the hand of a divine being, but by humanity.

Even when we look at domesticated farm animals, the principle holds. Modern domesticated animals (pets included) are shaped by breeding for particular characteristics, including temperament, abilities, and tasty, tasty meats.
