Welcome!

Welcome to Evolution: An Evolving Mindset, your portal to evolutionary thought!

Battling ignorance, one giant lizard at a time.

Here you will find discussions debunking Creationist lines of thought. There is a movement afoot to give Creationism the same educational space as scientific theories such as Evolution, and this must be stopped! Creationism is based on conjecture and myth, and does not involve observable testing and hypotheses, and therefore cannot be considered a reasonable alternative to Evolutionist theories.

In order to begin this journey, we present some points of entry into the mire that is Creationist thought.
We hope that this humble website will help to contribute to positive thought and discussion around evolutionary theory, leading scientific debates forward, rather than miring it in the erroneous beliefs of the past.

Selective Breeding: I Made This Sandwich Myself

The banana: a perfect food, made to fit the perfect human hand.

Unfortunately for divinely packed lunch boxes everywhere, the modern banana is as much a product of human intervention as most of our food today.

One of the many arguments held up as proof of a divine creative hand guiding humanity is the shape of a banana. Creationists who hold to this belief explain that the banana is perfect in every way, from the way it fits in one's hand to the protective peel to the way it changes colour to indicate its edibility. Yet the banana as we know it today is the product of selective breeding that has encouraged a shape, size, taste and colour most pleasing and advantageous to those tending to them.

This principle extends outward to all other cultivated foods. Where there is human intervention, there is human shaping. Grapes, apples, oranges, and all other common produce have been shaped, not by the hand of a divine being, but by humanity.

Even when we look at domesticated farm animals, the principle holds. Modern domesticated animals (pets included) are shaped by breeding for particular characteristics, including temperament, abilities, and tasty, tasty meats.

Fossil Records: A Dino a Day Keeps the Creationist Away

And so dinosaurs and humans lived together, side-by-side, in a glorious tropical paradise that completely lacked in being stomped to death or eaten as prey.

As wonderful as it would be to ride a dinosaur to work, alas, it is not to be.

The geological record is such that, when consulted, it quickly reveals that the time between the Age of Dinosaurs and the Age of Humanity is extremely long. There is no overlap between the geological layers containing dinosaur fossils and those containing early hominids. Thus, there were no early humans living amongst the dinosaurs, and the timeline between the beginning of humanity and the end of the dinosaurs requires that the Creationist view of the age of the world be stretched. Even accounting for a belief in the literal paradise of The Garden of Eden, Creationist texts such as the Bible do not reference any such dragon-like creatures, and therefore, one must assume that there was life on earth for a great while before humanity came into being.

With such a simple refutation of the Creationist view of the age of the world, this literalist interpretation must immediately come under increased scrutiny.

Alas for us all, the only pet dinosaurs we are ever likely to encounter are those in Jurassic Park.

Radiometrics: A Glowingly Good Time

Proof? What do we need of proof?

Proof is everything.

One of the greatest arguments against creationism is radiometric dating. Basic tools such as carbon dating have easily debunked the stated ages of such relics as the Shroud of Turin, deftly illustrating the way certain artifacts truly fit into the historic record.

As a result, radiometric dating becomes an important tool in understanding things like the age of the universe. By using meteorite samples, scientists have been able to date the Earth itself to 4.54 billion years old, far older than the unsubstantiated Creationist accounts of a world only 6,000 to 10,000 years old. These scientific studies conclusively show that the literalist account of the divine creation of the universe as taking no more than six twenty-four hour days, culminating in no more than ten thousand years of life is impossible. This timeline is far too short to account for the diversity of life on earth, the variety of changes to the geological and species records over the Ages, and the radiometric records themselves.
